A Loft in the Hills of Turin: Dialogue Between History and Contemporary Design

In the heart of the hills surrounding Turin, a former 17th-century convent is transformed into a loft with a contemporary character.

Among the hills surrounding Turin, a loft on the ground floor of a 17th-century villa — once a convent — becomes a place where history and design meet in a story of balance and character. The renovation project, designed by FL architetti, preserved the original architectural identity while enhancing the historic structure with industrial-inspired details: the black iron and fluted glass partition, exposed metal supports, natural oak flooring and cement finishes define an authentic and rigorous environment capable of blending memory with contemporary living.

FL architetti is a studio based in Turin, founded in 2002 by Fabrizio Caudana and Luca Gandini, later joined by Alberto Minero. Active in the fields of architecture and interior design, the studio develops projects ranging from private residences to public and urban spaces. The works of FL architetti, internationally published and awarded — including the Mosaic Foundation Award in Washington D.C. — also include exhibition and installation design.

For the bathroom, FL architetti chose Geda faucets, in particular the Koè collection, for its distinctive design and its perfect alignment with the architectural vision of the loft. The design, inspired by the industrial world — recognizable in the handles recalling valve levers — interacts with the natural textures and raw surfaces of the interior, creating a refined and warm balance. The choice of the brushed brass finish defines the atmosphere of the space: a warm metal without reflections that creates a balanced dialogue between the industrial strength of the structure and the delicacy of natural surfaces, while warm lighting enhances its material character. The composition includes the wall-mounted washbasin faucet, the shower set with round showerhead, the hand shower and the built-in waterfall outlet, and the bidet mixer. A coherent ensemble that integrates with the warm light and the chromatic palette of the project, creating an intimate, essential space with strong expressive character.

This loft within a 17th-century villa represents a refined example of architectural restoration combined with contemporary design. Every detail, from materials to design solutions, has been conceived to create a unique space capable of welcoming and inspiring with elegance. With Koè by Geda, the bathroom becomes a natural extension of the architecture, interpreting industrial aesthetics in a contemporary way.
